There is a huge variety of things to see and do in Plymouth, ranging from historic landmarks to theatres and Naval attractions. Best of all, a lot of these are free. Below we have put together five of the best:

The Elizabethan Barbican

An essential port of call for any visit to Plymouth, the Barbican is the site where Drake and Raleigh once weighed anchor. Today, it is a bustling community of specialist shops, restaurants, cafes and world-class attractions, all in a picturesque harbour setting. Known as 'the jewel in Plymouth's crown', the Barbican is a must-see. It's approximately a ten minute walk from Plymouth's train station, and it's easily accessible too.

National Marine Aquarium

Plymouth's aquarium is the UK's largest, and is another thing you should not miss out on when visiting the city. This fascinating underwater world is also a registered charity, so your visit helps to promote understanding of the sea through education and research. Species at the aquarium include sharks, jellyfish and sting rays. Plymouth train station is approximately a ten minute walk away.

Plymouth Gin Distillery

Black Friars Distillery, the working home of Plymouth Gin since 1793, and is the oldest working gin distillery in England. The building dates back to the early 1400s. Guided tours show visitors how the gin is made, and tutored tasting sessions offer the chance to sample the finished product. Just a short journey from Plymouth train station, the distillery is conveniently located in the heart of the city.

Theatre Royal

There is always something good on at the Theatre Royal. Even if there isn't an actual show that catches your eye, you can always take a tour behind the scenes for a unique look at how the busy venue operates. Tours are followed by a delicious lunch at The Mezz restaurant. Plymouth train station is around a five to ten minute walk away.

Plymouth Pavilions

Including a performance venue, ice rink and swimming pool, there's something for everyone at Plymouth Pavilions. Celebrating over 20 years in business, the Pavilions have proved a hit with locals and visitors alike.
