Advance

Buy in advance, subject to availability

Advance fares are Single (one-way) tickets offering great value for money on many longer distance journeys.

You must book in advance and fares are subject to availability. Generally, the earlier you book the better the deal. You can mix and match Advance fares for a return journey.

Advance fares are valid only on the date and train shown on the ticket and are non-refundable. You can change the time or date of travel before departure of the first reserved train. Any difference in fare and an administration fee will be payable.

Child discounts apply for all Advance fares.

Railcard holders get 1/3 off all Standard Class Advance fares. Senior, HM Forces and Disabled Persons Railcard holders also get 1/3 off all First Class Advance fares.

In addition, 16-25 Railcard holders get 1/3 off First Class Advance fares for travel on CrossCountry East Midlands Trains, First Great Western, East Coast and Virgin Trains services. Please note that minimum fares / time restrictions may apply to tickets bought with a Railcard. If you buy your tickets with a Railcard, don't forget to bring your Railcard with you when you travel as you'll be asked to show it on board and your ticket won't be valid without it.

CrossCountry Advance tickets extended

We understand that when you travel, you don't always know exactly which train you want to catch until you're ready to leave. So why should that stop you getting a bargain on your ticket price?

Did you know that you can now buy our great value range of Advance tickets and reserve your seat up to 15 minutes before you board a CrossCountry service, via our website or our Train Tickets app?  These tickets are not available at the station or on other websites on the day of travel so you'll always find the best fare for your CrossCountry journey on our website or app.

Choosing your ticket

We can show you all the options so that you can find the right train, at the right time, at the right price. And you can compare journeys and prices side by side to get the best deal.

But if you're not sure which is the best ticket for you, choose a ticket type from the menu and we'll try to answer your questions.
