Safer Places
Winchester is one of a number of cities in the West of England operating the Safer Places scheme. With a distinctive yellow sticker in the window, vulnerable people can identify safer places to seek rest, refuge, and assistance when visiting Winchester.
For those who visit Winchester regularly, the Winchester GoLD website has more details on the Safer Places scheme and where to find assistance.
Community Toilet Scheme
All public toilets in the city of Winchester have accessible facilities. These are marked on the city centre maps available from the visitor information centre. The RADAR scheme is in use and keys are available for loan or purchase for a small fee from the Visitor Information Centre.
Uneven Pavements
Winchester is one of the UK's most beautiful historic cities, but as such the streets can be narrow or uneven. Additionally, the city is situated on a hill that runs from west to east along a pedestrianised High Street. Some of the routes within the City Centre are therefore quite steep, and they are cobbled in places.
Visitors who have mobility issues should plan their visit carefully and take public transport where possible to avoid issues on uneven or hilly walkways.
Changing Places
The Winchester Science Centre has an accessible 'changing place' toilet and changing facility. There's plenty of space for a wheelchair and two carers/personal assistants, so it is fully accessible for all visitors. If you need to use the Changing Places facility out of hours, you can access it from outside the building using a RADAR key.
Shopmobility
Winchester's Shopmobility service is available to anyone who has difficulty in getting around. Young or old, resident or visitor, anyone can hire a Shopmobility scooter or wheelchair for a small charge.
Shopmobility is located on the upper parking level of the Brooks Car Park. Scooters or wheelchairs must be booked in advance by contacting the centre on 01962842626.
