With Taunton playing host to several ICC Cricket World Cup matches this summer, you might have considered heading down to Somerset to see what else there is to do!

You’ll be pleased to hear it’s not just world class cricket on offer in Taunton – although during the summer months you shouldn’t miss it! This vibrant market town also boasts plenty of history, culture and nature to explore!

So, what are you waiting for? Read on to discover our favourite things to do in Taunton and take advantage of great prices when you book an Advance Ticket with CrossCountry.

1. Catch the cricket at Somerset County Cricket Club

The world cup might be over, but there are matches being played at the Somerset Country Cricket Club throughout the season. As winner of the Royal London One-Day Cup 2019, it’s a venue that will offer world class cricket whenever you visit. If your trip doesn’t coincide with match day, why not visit the Somerset Cricket Museum.

2. Discover local history at the Museum of Somerset

Housed within the 12th century walls of Taunton’s castle, you can learn about history spanning back over 400 million years at the Museum of Somerset. If you’re interested in natural history, military history, or information about the local people, there’s an exhibition for you here.  Admission is free, so there’s no excuse not to go check it out.

3. Shop until you drop

Taunton’s busy streets offer plenty of shopping. With everything from high street favourites to independent boutiques, there’s something for everyone in this town. Bath Place is great if you’re looking for unique finds; plus with a great selection of coffee shops, you’ll find somewhere to rest once your shopping is done.

4. Enjoy the great outdoors at a local park

Taunton boasts a wide range of beautiful parks, so there’s plenty to explore. Whether you’re a bit green fingered and want to see spectacular flowers, or prefer a peaceful stroll through meadows, Taunton’s parks have something to offer you. From the riverside French Weir Park, with its plentiful picnicking spots to quaint Vivary Park with its beautiful fountain, there’s plenty of choice.

5. Explore the local area by walking Bridgewater Canal

Get out of Taunton and enjoy the Bridgewater Canal. The well-maintained towpath makes it the perfect way to explore the Somerset countryside, and a lovely, gentle walk, or even a cycle. Decide to explore the full 15 miles to Bridgewater, or simply go as far as you fancy and then make your way back to Taunton.

6. Sample the cider

Somerset is known for its history of cider production, and you’d be mad to miss out on the chance to sample it close to its source. Many of Taunton’s plentiful pubs offer a selection of local ciders to try, but the Ring of Bells pub is one of our favourites, thanks to its friendly, traditional vibe, and sunny beer garden.

7. Watch a play at Brewhouse Theatre

The Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton exemplifies everything that is great about regional theatre – a great program including local talent, visiting talent, and film screenings. The lively program showcases live music, cabaret shows, and dance productions as well as theatre and film. The Centre also has supporting gallery space, so there’s always something to check out.

8. Indulge in Afternoon Tea

Somerset might not be as well known for its afternoon tea as its neighbour, Devon, but that doesn’t mean you should skip this iconic English tradition. Taunton is home to plentiful cafés dotted around the town. Mr Miles is one of our favourites with its vintage-inspired interiors, wide range of tea options and extensive gift shop.

9. Pick up local produce at the Farmers’ Market

Agriculture is one of the biggest industries in Somerset, and the resulting products and produce are well worth the effort – cheeses, sausages and, of course, locally grown apples and cider. The farmers’ market in Taunton is every Thursday, and you’ll find a plentiful supply of delicious locally produced food and drink. If you visit in September, your trip might coincide with the annual Food and Drink Festival.

10. Relax and unwind with a spa day

If you’re looking to relax after a busy visit to Taunton, visiting a spa is an excellent choice. Enjoy a relaxing massage, pamper yourself with a beauty treatment or simply chill out in a sauna. Buff Urban Day Spa is located minutes from the station and offers a wide range of treatments.
