Spend Quality Time with Mum this Mother’s Day
Thursday March 8, 2018
With Mother’s Day coming up on the 11 March, we thought we’d give you some gift inspiration. But instead of chocolates or flowers, why not treat your Mum to an experience this Mother’s Day? What your Mum really wants on Mother’s Day is to spend quality time with you, so plan a fun day out for you to enjoy together! Whether your Mum loves adventure, culture, relaxation or is a bigger kid than you are, we’ve picked out something you can do together.
If your Mum likes adventure
…a trip to Edinburgh to climb Arthur’s Seat is a wonderful Mother’s Day gift. You can’t get much more adventurous than climbing an extinct volcano, so pack your walking boots, layer up and jump on a train to Scotland!
Arthur’s Seat is the highest point of a volcano which last erupted 350 million years ago, boasting 360° views of beautiful Edinburgh below.
The climb starts from Holyrood Park just outside the city centre and is a short hike to the highest point, although you might arrive out of breath. See if you can spot Edinburgh Castle which sits on the remains of another extinct volcano one mile away.
It’s often very windy at the top but if you layer up, you can enjoy a picnic at the summit! Alternatively, Edinburgh is full of swanky restaurants, cute tea rooms and trendy bars and pubs to grab something to eat when you’re back down.

If your Mum likes culture
… a trip to Durham is sure to excite. Often overshadowed by its fun-loving neighbour, Newcastle, Durham is a fantastic place for a stimulating and culture-filled day out.
Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral were both awarded the status of a World Heritage Site in 1986 providing international recognition for this unique, historic and scenic site. Standing side by side overlooking the cobbled streets of medieval Durham and surrounded by the River Wear, the duo boasts magnificent architecture and stunning views. Spend time walking the cathedral grounds and appreciating the stunning surroundings. If you and your Mum are Harry Potter fans, you may recognise some parts of the Cathedral from the films!
Durham Castle is now part of Durham University and visits to the Castle are by guided tours only. Take your Mum back in time as you are told about the history of this ancient building and learn about what it’s like to live there today.
Impressive buildings are not all there is to see in Durham. Home to insightful museums, entertaining theatres and blossoming nature, as well as an array of cafes, shops and galleries; your culture loving Mum will be entertained for the entire day, or longer if you wish.

If your Mum likes to be pampered
… a trip to Cheltenham Spa is the choice for you. Cheltenham has been a spa resort town since 1716, when the health benefits of the town’s natural spa waters were discovered. There’s no better place to spoil your Mum than a spa day in Cheltenham!
Take your Mum for a dip in one of Cheltenham’s luxurious spas where you can chill, unwind and relax in each other’s company. Whether you choose to have a massage or manicure, your Mum will definitely feel pampered!
There’s a huge choice of spas in and around the Regency town of Cheltenham but our go-to for guaranteed luxury and gorgeous surroundings is the Greenway Hotel and Spa. Located on the outskirts of Cheltenham, within the rolling hills of the Cotswolds, the Greenway is a 16th century luxury Elizabethan manor house hotel and spa.
With a hydrotherapy pool, thermal suites, outdoor hot tub, Champagne nail bar and an array of beauty treatments; the Greenway’s spa has got it all. To top your day off, why not indulge in the hotel’s afternoon tea, enjoying each other’s company and some fizz!
If you’re staying the night, pack your wellies and Barbour jacket for a beautiful countryside walk in the Cotswolds; a perfect way to end to your relaxing trip.

If your Mum is a big kid
… get yourselves to Manchester to let your Mum feel like a child again. Sometimes it’s nice to forget your responsibilities and just have some fun; Mums feel like this too! So, why not get some role reversal going and take a day trip to trendy Manchester for a day full of childish activities.
Let Mum jump for joy at Flip Out Manchester. A 35,000 square foot indoor trampoline park where you and your Mum can have fun and be active together. Or how about some crazy golf? With drinks? And music? Junkyard Golf Manchester has three 9-hole golf courses, complete with UV paint and funky music. Try one of their cocktails, served in a red cup and topped with fizzy sweets!
Perhaps your Mum would prefer a game of laser tag or a go on Manchester’s go-karting circuit. Whichever activity tickles your fancy, let your young-at-heart mum act her shoe size this Mother’s Day.
