Melton Mowbray train station has been serving the Leicestershire town since it first opened in 1846. The station sits on the line operating between Birmingham New Street and Cambridge, with services to Stansted Airport.
The station first opened as Melton in 1846, with a building that is thought to have been designed by William Parsons and Sancton Wood. The original building is still standing, with a porte-cochère added in at a later date. Twenty years following the original construction of Melton station, a snowstorm caused the roof to collapse onto the platforms and train lines, though fortunately no passengers were injured. The line was quickly cleared and repairs made to ensure that the station was safe going forward.
Since its original opening, the name has changed several times. Originally known as Melton, it was renamed Melton Mowbray in 1876 and changed again to Melton Mowbray South in 1923. In 1957, it was changed to Melton Mowbray Town to differentiate it from Melton Mowbray North, and was finally – permanently – changed to Melton Mowbray in 1965. As well as name changes, Melton Mowbray station has seen some aesthetic updates over the years too. In 2011, a large refurbishment project saw upgraded canopies, resurfaced platforms, passenger information screens, improved accessibility, and a new footbridge. This refurbishment project saw the station commended at the National Rail Awards in 2014!
