Paignton Railway Station serves the seaside town of Paignton in Devon and is one of three towns to make up the area of Torbay.
The station was built by the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway and opened in August 1859. The line was extended in 1910, and as a result, the platforms were lengthened to accommodate longer trains. Another expansion in 1924 saw a larger booking office built and new canopies erected over the platforms. Many structures are still standing today, with the old goods shed now being used as the ticket office.
Station facilities include a café to pick up a snack before your journey, toilets, with an accessible toilet and a waiting room to take shelter while waiting for your train.
You can reach Paignton railway station from a range of locations across the UK with CrossCountry. Popular routes to Paignton include Cheltenham to Paignton, Taunton to Paignton, Birmingham to Paignton and Bristol to Paignton.
Things to do in Paignton
Paignton is a traditional seaside town with gorgeous sandy beaches only a 10-minute walk from the railway station. On the beach, you’ll find the award-winning Paignton Pier filled with fun seaside arcade games and rides from bumper cars to water boats and a helter-skelter. You can also discover the famous Pier Café, award-winning Devon ice cream, and many other snack bars and cafés. Just off the beach is Pirates Bay adventure golf, perfect for getting all the family involved in and practising their mini-golf skills.
Take a step back in time with a 7-mile journey on a traditional steam train along the South Devon coastline. The Dartmouth Steam Railway runs from Dartmouth to Kingswear and takes around 30 minutes one way. You can board the steam train at Paignton railway station, and there is a range of tickets available, including the option to add on a ferry journey from Kingswear to Dartmouth.
Just outside of town and only a 20-minute walk from the station is Paignton Zoo. With over 2000 animals at the zoo, you’ll be sure to see your favourite animal up close. The zoo regularly hosts fun events for the whole family to enjoy, along with the educational centre and keeper talks; there is so much to learn and discover.
The town centre is perfect for rounding off your visit with some light shopping, from high street stores to local boutiques. There is also plenty of restaurants and cafes to explore in town if you’re feeling peckish...
