About Ibrox Stadium

Rangers Football Club had no stadium when it formed in 1872. For the first few years, the club played on Glasgow Green and other public pitches around Glasgow. They briefly settled into a new home ground in 1875 and moved to Ibrox in 1887. Following the opening of Celtic Park in 1892, Rangers committed to developing their own stadium which they opened in 1899 and named Ibrox Park.

Disaster struck only three years later in 1902 when a wooden terrace collapsed during an international match between England and Scotland. The tragedy led to 25 deaths and over 500 injuries.

Sadly, another disaster occurred in 1971, but this led to another redevelopment of the stadium which included modern ticketing, security and public-address systems. This placed Ibrox at the forefront of modern stadium management.

Later development of the stadium included a new 10,000-seat red brick main stand which was built in 1929. It was considered architecturally significant enough to become a Category B listed building in 1987.

The renovations were completed in 1997, and the ground was renamed Ibrox Stadium. Ticket sales and income grew significantly over this period, cementing the modern success of this sporting venue.

As well as hosting more than a century of football history, including three Scottish cup finals, Ibrox Stadium has also been home to a range of other sporting events. The stadium was chosen for a world championship boxing match in 1980 and it hosted the 2014 Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens tournament. The rugby tournament set a record for attendance after 171,000 people attended four sessions of play.

Ibrox Stadium has seen its share of musical performances too. Simple Minds performed here in 1986 and Frank Sinatra put on a show in 1990. Elton John and Billy Joel each played a concert in 1998 and Bon Jovi rocked the stadium three times between 1996 and 2007. Harry Styles was the most recent performer with the first stadium concert of his solo career hosted here in 2022.
