Things to do at Truro Cathedral

The first thing to do when arriving at Truro Cathedral is to admire the architecture from the outside. The original St Mary’s church was rebuilt in 1504 in the Gothic style for which it is now renowned. However, construction wasn’t officially completed until 1910, with the addition of the Western Towers.

The stained-glass windows will immediately catch your eye, shimmering in the light from the gentle lapping water of the Truro River. Once you step inside, each window tells a story. Arguably, the most striking of the stained-glass windows are the rose windows. These three art pieces elegantly reflect the holy trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Daily services of Holy Communion, Morning Prayer, and Evening Prayer are held at the Cathedral, predominantly led by the Presiding Bishop. Between these regular services, knowledgeable volunteer guides offer tours that provide the perfect way to learn more about the history of the Cathedral. These tours help visitors to see it in a different light by discovering more of the hidden treasures and secrets that enrich the building's story.

There are a number of different types of tours you can book, including tower and roof tours, where visitors get to take in the breathtaking and rare view of the rest of the city atop the historic building.

Beyond regular services and tours, there are still a wide variety of events that take place at the Cathedral all throughout the year. Among the most popular of Truro Cathedral events are concerts, often featuring the array of instruments that already call the Cathedral home. There are frequent lunchtime concerts that spotlight the Cathedral's grand piano, as well as organ recitals that are usually available to watch online.

Art exhibitions are also a regular event, maximising the building's unique atmosphere with local artists' creations on display for everyone to enjoy.
