Disruption between Three Bridges and Gatwick Airport expected until 16:00

    Train companies affected

    Gatwick Express, Southern, Thameslink

    Routes affected

Gatwick Express between Brighton and London Victoria

Southern between Littlehampton / Bognor Regis / Seaford / Eastbourne / Portsmouth Harbour / Southampton Central / Ore / Havant and London Victoria, and also between Bognor Regis / Eastbourne and London Bridge

Thameslink between Brighton / Horsham / Littlehampton and Bedford, between Brighton and Cambridge, and also between Horsham and Peterborough

    Description

A fault with the signalling system between Three Bridges and Gatwick Airport is causing disruption to journeys through these stations. Trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised.

A normal service is expected to resume by 16:00.

    Customer advice:

Services which run through Gatwick Airport and Three Bridges will be subject to cancellation or alteration.

To alleviate delays as much as possible a reduced Southern and Gatwick Express service will be in operation:

    • Gatwick Express services from Brighton to London Victoria are suspended at this time, some services may be able to run, this will be decided on an individual train basis.
    • Littlehampton, Eastbourne and Portsmouth / Southampton services to London Victoria will run as booked, though there may be short notice alterations on these services.

Thameslink at this time will be running their normal volume of service; however, they will be subject to alteration.

To assist you on your journey ticket acceptance is in place with the following services:

    • Southern and Thameslink will accept each others tickets between London and Brighton / Horsham
    • Metrobus between Redhill and Horsham.
    • London Buses between Redhill and Central London
    • London Underground between London Victoria, London Blackfriars and London Bridge
    • Gatwick Express tickets will be valid on Southern and Thameslink services via reasonable routes

How is this currently affecting the train service?

Fewer trains are able to run between Three Bridges and Gatwick Airport, this is to ease congestion building up in the Gatwick area.

The work on the signalling fault is ongoing. To aid service, points (movable sections of track that allow trains to switch over to other running lines) have been set in a "fixed" state. This will enable operators to run services, albeit with limited capacity to alter running lines, hence disruption is expected to continue.

At this time, Network Rail operatives are carrying out comprehensive tests of the cables in the area, to determine what is causing the fault and carry out effective repairs. We are advised this will take until 10:30, and we will be able to update you further then. Train service will remain in operation while this takes place.

Can you tell me more about the incident?

We have been advised of a fault with the signalling system in the Gatwick Airport area. The fault in question has been confirmed as a "track circuit failure". The fault in question is affecting both the fast / express line from Three Bridges towards London, also the slow / stopping line from Gatwick towards Three Bridges.

This means the signalling system is unable to automatically verify if the next section of track past the affected signal is clear.

The rail network is designed so that if a signal stops working, trains will stop before they reach it. Whilst this issue is ongoing, train crew will stop at the affected signal and contact the signalling centre to confirm their location, which at this point the signaller will verbally authorise the driver to continue towards the next signal. This process adds time to every trains journey, which means services can experience short delays.

Network Rail engineers are aware of the issue and have been working through the night and into the morning in order to fix the issue. However, the problem is still ongoing. They are still on site and working to get the problem fixed as quickly and safely as possible.

Disruption between Ashford International and Hastings until at least 14:30

    Train companies affected

    Southern

    Routes affected

Between Ashford International and Hastings / Eastbourne

    Description

All lines have reopened following a broken down train between Ashford International and Hastings. Trains between Ashford International and Hastings may still be cancelled or delayed whilst service returns to normal.

Disruption is expected until at least 14:30.

    Customer Advice
Please allow extra time for your journey this morning.

Rail replacement buses have been requested from Southerns suppliers. These have been confirmed, and will operate out of Ashford, Rye, and Hastings. Please speak to station staff for running details on these buses.

Traffic issues are expected due to the location of the broken down train, affecting the traffic on approach to Rye, and thus the replacement buses. We are working to have this resolved as soon as possible.

Your tickets will be valid on Southeastern services, between Ashford / Hastings and London. Please note this does not include their high speed services.

How is this currently affecting the train service?

Earlier this morning, a train broke down at Rye. Attempts to resolve the issue have been successful, and the train will be on the move shortly, which will allow for train service to resume.

Due to the length of this disruption, some of our staff and trains will be in the incorrect location, so there will still be some alterations required to return services to the published timetable.

Please note, the shuttle service between Ashford and Rye for this evening, is suspended at this time. Once the issue with the unit is resolved, we may be able to reinstate these services. You will still be able to travel via other train services in the area. Should we not be able to fix the train in time, the rail replacement buses will remain in operation to assist.

Can you tell me more about the incident?

The 08:24 Ashford to Eastbourne service suffered a fault with its brakes. An attempt was made to use another train to assist it out of the way, however, this proved unsuccessful. Passengers on the affected train were evacuated safely. Maintenance personnel have attended, and resolved the fault with the train, allowing it to move clear.

When a train fault occurs, the driver will contact train technicians and will be guided through a 10 minute repair process. If they are unable to fix the fault, the train will be terminated and taken out of passenger service and returned to the depot for full safety investigation and repairs. This is likely to have an immediate knock on effect, particularly in busy locations across our network, as well as on later services in the day.

Disruption between Three Bridges and Gatwick Airport expected until 15:00

A normal service is expected to resume by 15:00.
