December 2018 timetable change

Train times and tickets are usually available for customers to plan and book their journeys up to 12 weeks before departure. However, for the duration of the next timetable beginning on 9th December, some may not be available until closer to the date of departure.

The majority of weekday services will be unaffected, although journeys at weekends are likely to see changes to the expected timetable.

There will be a slight delay whilst we work on releasing Advance purchase tickets and seat reservations for all of our trains from the 9th December.

What this means for buying tickets

With only a small number of trains affected by engineering works, we want customers to continue planning their journeys with confidence and CrossCountry have put in place a series of measures to reassure them.

Purchasing tickets between 12 and 6 weeks prior to departure

Customers will still be able to purchase Anytime and Off-Peak train tickets 12 weeks before departure, however CrossCountry Advance tickets may not be available until six weeks before departure due to timetables not being finalised.

Purchasing tickets on other operators

If a customer purchases a ticket more than six weeks before their journey, they should check back with the train operator they will be travelling with at the six weeks mark to see if their train time has been altered. If so, and they then do not wish to travel, they can request a refund from their original retailer.

Purchasing tickets for CrossCountry services

If you booked between 12 and 6 weeks before your travel date and your journey has been affected, you can travel on an alternative CrossCountry train two hours either side of your original service, although any seat reservation on the original train cannot be honoured on the other service.

How can I find out if my journey will be affected?

If you are due to travel within the next six weeks, you can see if your journey has changed by searching our website.

If your travel date is more than six weeks in advance, you can select your travel date in the “by date” tab which will allow you to search for the work being carried out on the network. If engineering work is happening on your travel date you will see a list of results, which you can select to view more information.

You can also use our route map to see which of these engineering works may affect your journey.

    Great Western Railway between Bristol Parkway / Cardiff Central / London Paddington and Penzance, between Bristol Temple Meads / Cardiff Central / London Paddington and Exeter St Davids and also between London Paddington and Plymouth

    Description

    Bridge and tunnel maintenance is taking place at Whiteball Tunnel between between Taunton and Plymouth, from Monday 18 February until Friday 8 March, closing all lines.

    In addition, similar work will also take place between Totnes and Ivybridge, at the Marley Tunnel, closing some lines.

    The following changes will apply until the works have been fully completed:

    Buses will replace trains between Taunton and Exeter St Davids. Please note, the journey time between these stations by bus is approximately 65 minutes.

    CrossCountry

    A revised 2-hourly train service will operate between Exeter St Davids and Plymouth.

    Great Western Railway 

    A revised 2-hourly train service will operate between London Paddington and Penzance / Plymouth. These trains will also be diverted via Yeovil Junction, not calling at Taunton and Tiverton Parkway. Journey times will be extended between Totnes and Plymouth, so most of these trains will terminate at Plymouth. Journeys between Plymouth and Penzance should generally operate to normal schedule.

    Other train services between London Paddington and the West of England will also run at reduced frequency; although, these trains will terminate at Taunton instead.

    Services between Cardiff Central / Bristol Temple Meads and Exeter St Davids / Paignton / Plymouth / Penzance will be amended.

    Non folding bicycles are not allowed on rail replacement bus services at any time. Folding bicycles are allowed if fully folded. For more information, please see here.

    Project Information:

    Whiteball Tunnel will be closed for three weeks to allow for vital engineering work to be completed on the 170-year-old structure. The tunnel walls will be relined with concrete to safeguard against loose masonry and brick falls, a task which will be carried out using specialist robotic equipment which sprays a concrete lining onto the walls of the tunnel.
