About the station
Stafford railway station has served Staffordshire since 1837 and is the second busiest railway station in Staffordshire. The first Stafford railway station was built in 1837 by the Stafford and Uttoxeter Railway to serve the Stafford to Uttoxeter and Stafford to Shrewsbury lines; both of which are no longer running. The station has since been rebuilt three more times with the current station being built in 1962 as part of a modernisation project. It was refurbished in 2015 to allow for shops and an improved ticket office. Today the station has five platforms with regular services to and from London and beyond. The Stafford Area Improvements Programme made significant upgrades to the station to allow for trains to use any platform regardless of the direction of travel; allowing more trains to run and stop at the station.
Stafford railway station serves a large variety of train routes across the UK. Popular CrossCountry routes include Bristol to Stafford, Bournemouth to Stafford and even Plymouth to Stafford.
Things to do in Stafford
Stafford is a market town rich in history and lies in the West Midlands between Wolverhampton and Stoke-on-Trent. The town centre combines old Tudor buildings with more modern shops and restaurants. The town centre holds many local events, including parades, monthly farmer’s markets and even a half marathon.
There is plenty of history to discover in Stafford including The Ancient High House, which is an Elizabethan townhouse built in 1595 and hosted King Charles I in 1642. Discover more about the largest remaining timber-framed townhouse in England in the centre of Stafford town. If you have time to visit slightly further afield, Stafford Castle is a 30-minute walk or 12-minute bus ride out of town. This Grade II listed castle provides visitors with an insight into the history of the castle as well as incredible gardens and grounds to explore. For a memorable experience, visit during the annual Shakespeare Festival held at the castle.
If you are visiting on a sunny day, go and explore Victoria Park; an award-winning park situated in the heart of the town on the bank of the River Sow. The park recently underwent a major refurbishment which included the addition of a café, training centre, bandstand, and improved landscaping. There is lots of fun for children at the park with a large play area, water park, and a skate bowl.
If you want to explore more of what Stafford has to offer outside of the town’s history, the Guildhall Shopping Centre is a 10-minute walk from Stafford railway station. It boasts over 40 retail outlets, restaurants and independent shops. While you’re in town check out the Gatehouse Theatre which offers both touring and in-house productions.
Book your train ticket to Stafford with CrossCountry and discover what this historic town has to offer.
