A Disabled Persons Railcard is a great way for those living with disabilities to save money on train travel. If you are eligible, the railcard discount gives you a 1/3 off the price of any ticket type (except Season Tickets), any time, any day.
A one-year Railcard costs just £20, offering great savings on train fares for a low initial cost.
Benefits of a Disabled Persons Railcard

- Apply your Railcard discount to your Oyster card: Enjoy savings on London Underground and Docklands Light Railway services by linking your Disabled Persons Railcard to your Oyster card. Simply bring your Railcard and Oyster card to any staffed London Underground ticket booth to activate the discount.
- Savings for companions: When you travel with an adult family member, carer, or friend, they can enjoy the same discount as you.
- Exclusive offers and rewards: Card holders can access discounts on dining, holidays, shopping, and more.
How to Get a Disabled Persons Railcard
The eligibility criteria are pretty straightforward and cover a variety of situations. For example, if you receive Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Disability Living Allowance (DLA), you're likely eligible. It also applies if you have a permanent visual or hearing impairment or conditions like epilepsy.
People on benefits like Attendance Allowance, or those eligible for the Motability Scheme, can apply too. You can check the full eligibility requirements on the Railcard website.
From 1 March 2026, eligibility criteria for the Disabled Persons Railcard will extend to include a wider range of disabilities.
This will include:
- Those who have a Disabled Persons Bus Pass in England, Scotland or Wales
- Those who have a London Disabled Persons Freedom Pass
- Those who have a Blue Badge
- Those currently unable to drive on medical grounds
- Those who receive Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) benefits
- Those who receive Industrial Injuries Benefit for 20% degree of disablement or higher
- Those who are without speech

- A passport-sized photograph of each cardholder.
- A printed completed application form. Large print and easy-read versions are available to download from the Railcard website.
- A debit or credit card to pay.
Is there a Disabled Child Railcard?
There isn’t a dedicated Disabled Child Railcard as children’s travel is already universally discounted, so there are still great savings available for young travellers. Children under five can travel for free when accompanied by a fare-paying adult, and kids aged 5 to 15 receive a 50% discount on most train journeys - often a better deal than a Railcard discount.
Children aged 5 to 15 can still apply for a standard Disabled Persons Railcard. While it doesn’t provide an extra discount for the child, it does allow an accompanying adult to save a third on their ticket when travelling together.
How to Use a Disabled Persons Railcard
- You can apply your savings when you buy your ticket online or on the CrossCountry app. Just select the relevant Railcard when you choose your journey, and your discount will be applied.
- If you prefer, you can also apply your savings in person. Just go to a ticket booth or use a self-service ticket machine at the station. Select your journey and choose the Disabled Persons Railcard option to get your discount.
- Remember to bring your Railcard with you whenever you travel, as you'll need to show it along with your ticket to validate your discount.
