However, for big names, the best choice might be to head to the York Designer Outlet just outside the city centre, which is easily accessible by bus and has not only your favourite designers at amazing prices, but also a great selection of food and drink options for when you start to flag.

The city centre is home to an unrivalled collection of independent stores, which you will find tucked away around every corner. The tangle of streets around the city centre constantly opens up surprises, with charity shops brushing shoulders with fashion boutiques, gift shops, and hand-crafted jewellery shops.

One of the things York does particularly well is second-hand, vintage, antique and retro shops. York has a proud history as a chocolate-making centre - home to the Terry’s factory, amongst others. It’s 275 steps to the top!

Music and theatre also play a big part in the culture of York. With a beautifully refurbished theatre dating all the way back to 1744 in The York Theatre Royal, as well as The Grand Opera House. The former shows a mostly local programme, while the latter hosts a range of touring productions.

Of course, there’s plenty of folk heading to York for a great night out, whether it’s part of a hen or stag do, or for a special celebration.
