We are lucky enough to have a fantastic array of beaches up and down the UK. From picture perfect sandy shores to atmospheric rocky coves, you can find just about any kind to suit your trip. One standout place to appreciate an amazing stretch of coastline is Devon, why not hop on a CrossCountry train and take a trip to some of the best beaches in Devon.
Paignton Beach
Paignton Beach has long been a go-to destination for locals and tourists for its soft sand and panoramic views of the blue sea.
Paignton Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Devon for families, boasting spectacular views, soft sand, and an iconic pier stretching out into the sea. There are also lots of activities for the family to get involved in, like renting a pedalo, embarking on a fishing trip, or winning big at the amusement arcades.
The beach is just a fifteen-minute walk from Paignton station. You’ll be smelling the fresh sea air as soon as you alight the train.
Teignmouth Beach
The fishing port town of Teignmouth is surrounded by water, with the English Channel located to the east of the town, and the River Teign running through from the west. Its beach stretches far and wide, so even though this is a popular spot, especially in the height of summer, the crowds are never too overwhelming.
There is plenty to marvel at when you stroll across this sandy beach, with the channel on one side, and beautiful Georgian and Victorian buildings on the other; you’ll have eye-catching views wherever you look.
Teignmouth Beach is also not too far from Teignmouth station, a four-minute walk to be exact. In fact, you’re practically on the waterfront as soon as you step off the train.
Torre Abbey Sands
Torre Abbey Sands, as the name suggests, is one of the best sandy beaches in Devon. Central to Torquay, visitors can explore the plentiful sights and activities of the town whilst still having an action-packed day at the beach. Why not pick up a coffee from one of the many great cafes and take a stroll along the beach?
Along this long stretch of sand are also plenty of rock headlands, giving you ample opportunity to rest and shelter in some shade on especially sunny days.
Torre Abbey Sands is just over ten minutes walking distance from Torquay station.
Dawlish Town Beach
Dawlish is an idyllic town along the English Riviera, and its pleasing atmosphere is partly down to its picturesque sandy beach. Despite its closeness to the town, the lapping waves, sea breeze, and rocky crags give off the rejuvenating feeling of a true escape from daily life.
There is something unique to Dawlish Town Beach, as the railway rolls through right next to the beachfront, allowing visitors to wave to the passengers who are arriving at Dawlish. As a passenger, you’ll also glimpse the spectacular views that are on offer through the train window. Keep your eye out for the steam trains that sometimes travel across the beach.
With the railway so close by, it is no surprise that Dawlish station is just a two-minute walk to the beach.
Firestone Bay
Firestone Bay in Plymouth is a small but atmospheric pebble beach located just off Devil’s Point, and provides breath-taking views of Mount Edgcumbe, Stonehouse peninsula, and Drake’s Island.
This beach offers a different experience to your usual day out to the seaside, with more of an emphasis on water sports and activities. This beach is hugely popular for snorkelers, paddleboarders, and swimmers, too. There are also several shallow rockpools dotted across the beach, so there are plenty of opportunities to just take a small dip.
Firestone Bay is a little further out from Plymouth station, but is well worth the journey, which is around a thirty-minute bus journey, due to how secluded the bay is.
