Families all over the world fall in love with Cornwall when they first visit. The sandy beaches, the wild countryside, the friendly people - it’s the closest thing the UK has to an oasis. One of the best places to visit in Cornwall is Penzance. Not only is it a fantastic gateway to some of Cornwall’s most fabulous locations, such as the Isles of Scilly and Land's End, but it also boasts myriad opportunities to have fun.

Catch a train to Penzance station with CrossCountry and discover all the great things to do in Penzance with kids.

The Minack Theatre

Perched on the cliffs of Porthcurno is the Minack Theatre, an open-air amphitheatre overlooking the bay. The theatre was built by hand by Rowena Cade over the course of her lifetime. The result was a local and international gem. She transformed a wild cliffside into an enchanting living theatre, and in 1932, it hosted its first official production by the sea: Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

There are lots of family-friendly plays held at the Minack Theatre, like Pinocchio and Goodnight Mister Tom. Theatre is a remarkable cultural learning tool for children; it unlocks curiosity and wonder while introducing them to different people, perspectives, and experiences. It can help them focus and stay present, too, which is easier against the thrilling backdrop of the sea.

Picnics are welcome, but you can also grab a bite to eat at one of the many food outlets available. You can get sandwiches and ice cream at The Café, located at the top of the theatre and not open during performances, or visit the Terrace Coffee Shop for pasties, sausage rolls and cakes to enjoy during the interval.

While not exactly in Penzance, the Minack Theatre is so utterly unmissable that we had to include it. You can catch a bus from Penzance station to Porthcurno Car Park, and it’s ten minutes from there.

Penlee House Gallery & Museum

Visit Penlee House, a gallery and museum set within a beautiful park. The organisation showcases West Cornwall’s rich cultural heritage, incorporating the historic collections of Penzance Town Council, Penwith District Council, and Newlyn Art Gallery. Once you’ve explored the art and collections, take a stroll down to the harbour and admire the boats before stopping off at one of the fish and chip shops along the water.

Penlee House is a wonderful space for learning, with talks, tours, and workshops held throughout the year. From prehistoric Cornwall to the school days of a Victorian child, kids can step back in time and learn about diverse lives and experiences. They can also catch a glimpse into the inner workings of the museum, including what happens behind the scenes and how exhibitions are put together.

After a fulfilling day of education and exploration, stop by The Orangery for home-baked cakes and refreshments. Penlee House Gallery & Museum is a fifteen-minute walk from Penzance station. Alternatively, you can catch a bus to Penzance Green Market, and it’s a five-minute walk from there.

Jubilee Pool

Open throughout the summer and just ten minutes from Penzance station, Jubilee Pool is one of our favourite Penzance attractions for families. The iconic triangular saltwater pool juts out into the ocean, providing a safe and blissful bathing experience, where the views are just top-notch.

The main pool is suitable for all abilities, but children under 12 require adult supervision. There is also a 0.6m deep pool for toddlers and younger children. The Jubilee Pool Cafe is on hand for sandwiches, soup, homemade cakes, and expertly brewed coffee. Alternatively, you can bring your own packed lunch and enjoy a poolside picnic!

Each year, the long-running Jubilee Sea Swim takes place, starting from Newlyn. The swim follows the length of Penzance Promenade, with crowds of spectators lining the seafront to cheer participants on.

St Michael’s Mount

Out in the middle of Mount’s Bay and connected to the mainland via a cobbled causeway, the fascinating island world of St Michael’s Mount awaits curious kids.

The myths and legends of St Michael’s Mount make it a great family activity, sparking imaginations and telling spellbinding stories. Kids can marvel at a real suit of armour from a Samurai Warrior and a mummified cat from Egypt, as well as take in the bronze cannons whose shots once led to the capture of a Napoleonic ship.

You can travel to St Michael’s Mount with CrossCountry by heading to Penzance station by train and then catching a bus to Marazion. From there, you can either walk across the causeway during low tide or catch a boat during high tide.

Trengwainton Garden

With its combination of winding wooded paths, secluded corners, and vast open spaces, there are lots of places to picnic and play at Trengwainton Garden.

Head to the Terrace for impressive sea views and a large grassy area with summerhouses and seating. It’s the perfect spot for younger legs to run off some energy and for the grown-ups to rest and enjoy the scenery. On a clear day, you can see right across the 25 miles of Mount’s Bay to the Lizard Peninsula.

From July to September, Trengwainton holds its Summer of Play, an exciting lineup of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Held at the wilding village and free to join, you’ll get stuck into wood whittling, flower crafts, and lots of outdoor games. It’s definitely one of the best things to do in Penzance for families.

Be sure to visit the tearoom where there’s plenty of space for the kids to play and a great children’s menu. With lots to keep little ones captivated, Trengwainton is a fabulously family-friendly garden.
