Whether you’re travelling in from Birmingham, Nottingham, or Newport, join CrossCountry as we explore the best ways to spend Christmas in Cardiff.

The Spirit of Christmas, Bute Park

This Christmas, take a trip to Bute Park for a festive mile-long light trail around the stunning grounds. The Spirit of Christmas promises extravagant displays and magical hidden surprises waiting to be discovered across four dazzling worlds: Magic, Wonder, Hope, and Joy.

With no time limits, you’re free to wander at whatever pace suits you. And if the stunning displays aren’t enough, see how many of Santa’s sneaky elves you can spot along the trail – they’re sure to delight the little ones.

Journey through the nostalgia and magic of the season to warm your heart, then head to the Christmas Village and enjoy tasty food and drink to warm your soul.

The entrance to The Spirit of Christmas at Bute Park is a fifteen-minute walk from Cardiff Central. Come prepared with warm clothes as the entire trail is outdoors.

Shopping at Cardiff Christmas Market and The City of Arcades

Discover unique and seasonal gifts at the Cardiff Christmas Market. With an emphasis on local talent and independent creators, you’ll find incredible festive treasures as you wander through the fabulously decorated huts. There are plenty of food and drink stalls, so once you’ve checked out the shops, you can refuel with some tasty treats.

If you love historical buildings that display the true soul behind modern cities, The City of Arcades in Cardiff is the area to explore this Christmas. These Victorian and Edwardian buildings are steeped in history, and when winter rolls around they transform into a festive centrepiece with lights and decorations draped across the streets.

There are plenty of festive shopping opportunities along these arcades, which run through the heart of the city centre. So, if you’re doing some last-minute gift buying, you’ll have plenty of options in Cardiff. The closest arcade from the station is the vibrant Wyndham Arcade which is just a five-minute walk away.

Llandaff Cathedral

If you’re looking to spread some Christmas cheer, head to Llandaff Cathedral to enjoy one of the many seasonal events throughout November and December. The beautiful details within this building date back to the Norman era, although there is said to have been a Christian presence on the site since the 6th century.

Repairs and restorations have taken place over the years, most significantly since the Cardiff Blitz during World War Two, but the heart and soul of the building remains, and you’ll be dazzled by the craftsmanship.

At Christmas, the Cathedral hosts festive orchestra performances, charity carol singing, seasonal services, and much more for you to enjoy and learn during your trip to Cardiff. Whether your children are curious about the story behind Christmas or you want to embrace musical festive cheer, this historical landmark is the place to go. If you want to expand your Christmas trip, then check out the Christmas songs in concert in Bristol.

To reach Llandaff Cathedral from Cardiff Central station, you can take an approximately twenty-five-minute bus journey.

Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland

What better way to immerse yourself in the seasonal spirit than with funfair games, ice skating, seasonal snacks, and non-stop Christmas tunes at Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland? This festive bonanza is split into two sections in and around the grounds of Cardiff Castle. There is an ice-skating rink and ice trail at the castle itself, alongside a funfair and entertainment zone at the nearby City Hall Lawns.

The open-air ice trail is a unique way to experience the castle grounds in all their beauty. During winter, the space is illuminated with festive lights and music, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. If you fancy trying a fun and competitive game with friends, get stuck into Bavarian Curling, where you can order drinks to your private seating area.

You’ll find more bright and sparkly attractions at City Hall Lawns, which boasts traditional funfair games and tasty Christmas treats, such as mulled wine, hot chocolate, and doughnuts. There’s even a big wheel to look over the lit-up city and a rustic alpine bar to chill out and share laughs with friends.

Take a thirteen-minute walk from the station to the ice rink before a further five-minute walk to the funfair and bar.
