York has gained a name for itself within the vegan community – and deservingly so, because it is a city with great vegan options. With local produce that is some of the best in the UK and a troupe of innovative chefs to do amazing things with it, York is setting the tone for delicious plant-based food. Join CrossCountry as we explore the best vegan restaurants in York.

The Orchid

One of the most popular purely vegan restaurants in York is The Orchid. Their aim is simple: to help people embrace or include more aspects of vegan living. This ethos is celebrated in every aspect of the restaurant, from the food to the toiletries you’ll find in the restroom.

The Orchid focuses on providing its customers with the best quality meat substitutes, creating a meal that is cruelty-free without compromising authenticity and taste. Their menu is wide-ranging and includes a number of award-winning dishes, such as their vegan salt & pepper king prawns and spicy battered vegan pork belly.

The Orchid is relatively close to York station, just a seven-minute walk away.

Partisan

After almost ten years, it is hard to imagine the historic Micklegate without Partisan, waiting and welcoming with its delicious and locally produced food. Partisan was a labour of love, with founder and owner Florencia Clifford spending ten years as a zen chef or ‘Tenzo’ in the build-up to opening up her own restaurant. As soon as you step inside, you will notice the calm but bustling atmosphere.

Although their menu isn’t strictly vegan, there are a number of vegan dishes that will catch your eye. One of their more popular dishes is their organic tempeh sandwich, packed with grilled slices of marinated tempeh, as well as fresh and seasonal vegetables. Most of the menu is sprinkled with herbs that they grow on their farm, based on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds.

Beyond the food, Partisan hosts art exhibitions highlighting the work of local and national artists, which is also available to buy. Partisan is located on Micklegate which is just over a five-minute walk from York station.

The Grand

If you’re looking for a treat to maybe break up your day out in York, then The Grand offers the perfect opportunity to relax. The Grand is a luxurious five-star hotel that offers exceptional food within its eye-catching interior. The Grade II listed building was renovated into a hotel in 2010 and has become one of the go-to places to stay in York for its location and unique and historic style.

Beyond the setting, The Grand offers an impressive vegan alternative to their popular afternoon tea. There are plenty of savoury and sweet treats stacked atop a three-tiered stand that show off some of the best local and seasonal produce, carefully curated by the head patisserie chef, Devin Jones. Popular items include the cauliflower mousse tart, the vegan wild mushroom puff, and freshly baked scones with vegan almond and vanilla cream.

The Grand is located not too far from York station, it’s just a four-minute walk between you and an amazing array of delicious sandwiches and cakes.

Goji Café

Named after the goji berry, which is also known as the happy berry, Goji café is striving to create an environment that is happy and welcoming. Although Goji café is predominantly a vegetarian deli and café, there are plenty of vegan options on their menu. Located within the historic walls of York, the café has been serving delicious vegan food to locals and tourists for well over a decade now and continues to grow in popularity.

Experts in lunches and brunches, Goji offer a wide range of deli-style food, ranging from tofu banh mi to vegan mushroom burgers. Even the purely vegetarian dishes can be made vegan with clever substitutes like whipped oat cream and vegan cheese.

The café is just a fifteen-minute walk from the station on the other side of the iconic Shambles Market.

Remedy Coffee Shop

A coffee shop that has been working hard to maintain its spot as one of the UK’s top zero-waste cafes is the Remedy Coffee Shop. Since 2019, when the coffee shop opened its doors just south of the Shambles Market on Fossgate, Remedy has been serving sustainable, plant-based dishes with locally sourced ingredients to adoring locals.

Their menu includes a delicious and nutritious range of both sweet and savoury dishes. Think vegan French toast, aubergine schnitzel, and chickpea panzanella. Remedy is just over a fifteen-minute walk from the station, and on the way there, you can take the time to enjoy the historic sites dotted about the city centre.
