On Wednesday 20th April, members from the Community Rail Education Network met with colleagues from CrossCountry to discuss an upcoming sustainability education project. CrossCountry is a keen supporter of young peoples’ education and have pledged to help the project, both financially and with organisational support.
The initial brainstorming session in Birmingham, led by Education Network chair Karen Bennett of Community Rail Lancashire, saw the group coming up with ideas for a package of materials for Key Stage Two pupils to learn about sustainable travel.
With a new sustainability and climate change strategy published on April 21st, schools are looking for ways to teach children about green skills and the resources designed and produced by this project will support this. Initial ideas included putting together a package including a video, slideshow and activity pack for children to take home to their families.
Over the next few months, the group will continue to meet online and in-person to work on the project collaboratively before it planned launch in September.
