Bishop Line Community Rail Partnership recently welcomed more than 120 students to Locomotion, Shildon, for its 2026 Rail Safety and Careers event, bringing together partners from across the rail industry to inspire young people about future opportunities.
Over two days, students took part in workshops designed to build confidence in safe independent travel, help them navigate their next steps in education and introduce them to the wide range of rail careers available. They experienced Network Rail’s virtual‑reality rail safety session, explored how their personality traits link to different roles and learned about the impact of anti‑social behaviour and the importance of mental wellbeing.
Throughout the event, students spoke directly with Drivers, Travel Safe Officers, British Transport Police and specialists working behind the scenes in Engineering, Planning, Policy, Safety, Sustainability and Train Performance. Local colleges also attended to explain the courses that can support entry into the industry, giving students a clear sense of the pathways available to them.
