The following major engineering work will take place on the CrossCountry network. The majority of engineering work takes place at weekends and Bank Holidays, details of which can be found in the Travel Updates section, however, there are projects which will impact the train service on weekdays. These are detailed below.

August Bank Holiday Engineering work

If you are planning on travelling with us over the August Bank Holiday weekend (Saturday 24 – Sunday 25 August) then we strongly recommend you reserve a seat, as trains are expected to be extremely busy. As part of the East Coast Upgrade, Network Rail will be carrying out major track improvement work, with no trains operating to and from London Kings Cross and fewer services operated by other train companies between York and Edinburgh. In addition, there are a number of events and festivals taking place over the weekend and we expect higher than normal numbers of people traveling to locations such as Edinburgh, York and Leeds. If you are unable to reserve a seat, please consider other travel times or dates to ensure you have a comfortable journey.

Sunday 25 August

Trains will divert not to call at Stoke on Trent and Macclesfield. Journey times will remain unaffected. Rail replacement road transport will operate between:

-Stafford, Stoke on Trent and Macclesfield.

-Stoke on Trent, Macclesfield and Stockport.

Sunday 25 August until 1120

Rail replacement road transport will operate between Didcot Parkway and Oxford.

Sunday 25 August until 1400

Rail replacement road transport will operate between Chepstow, Newport and Cardiff Central.

London Kings Cross Upgrade

Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August 2019

The biggest upgrade of the East Coast Main Line in a generation will see the first major closure of the route in 20 years this summer.

The £1.2bn upgrade plan is set to create capacity for up to 10,000 extra seats a day on long-distance services, see faster journeys and improve reliability for passengers.

Early route improvement work has already taken place, but the first major engineering upgrade will mean no trains are able to travel between Peterborough or Cambridge and London King’s Cross during the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Passengers who are looking to travel to or from London King's Cross on 24/25 August are strongly advised not to travel. Although alternative routes and services are possible, these are expected to be full and customers should instead travel on Friday 23 or Tuesday 27.

You can see how your journey will be affected by visiting  The rail industry is working together to keep passenger disruption to a minimum by carrying out work at multiple locations along the route at the same time.
