The following major engineering work will take place on the CrossCountry network. The majority of engineering work takes place at weekends and Bank Holidays, details of which can be found in the Travel Updates section, however, there are projects which will impact the train service on weekdays. These are detailed below.

This Easter Network Rail will be upgrading the railway around Guildford to provide better journeys for millions of passengers.

These works will mean that the majority of Guildford station will be closed for 10 days between Friday 10 and Sunday 19 April. This will affect CrossCountry, South Western Railway, GWR and Southern services.

What the work will involve

Between Friday 10 April and Sunday 19 April Network Rail will be:

  • Replacing 11 sets of points around Guildford station
  • Upgrading 41 track circuits
  • Replacing almost a mile of track
  • Replacing more than a mile of conductor rail

These upgrades will provide a more reliable railway for trains between London and Guildford, Woking and Portsmouth, Reading and Redhill, and Guildford and Alton.

Line closures

Between Friday 10 April and Tuesday 14 April, Guildford station will be closed.

Platform one will open from Tuesday 14 April for a limited number of South Western Railway services to London Waterloo via Cobham & Stoke D’ Abernon.

The following lines will be closed between Friday 10 April and Sunday 19 April:

  • Worplesdon to Haslemere
  • Guildford to Ash
  • Guildford to Shalford

Travel information:

Friday 10 April to Sunday 19 April inclusive

Rail replacement road transport will operate between Woking/Guildford and Haslemere, plus Guildford and Aldershot for all 10 days of the work. A limited number of services from Guildford to London Waterloo via Cobham & Stoke D’ Abernon will resume from Tuesday 14 April.

GWR services between Reading and Gatwick Airport will terminate at Ash. Rail replacement road transport will run between North Camp and Gatwick Airport.

CrossCountry services from Newcastle to Guildford will terminate at Reading, whilst Southern services to Guildford will start and terminate at Epsom.

Preparatory works

Before the line closure between Friday 10 and Friday 19 April, there will also be three weekends of preparatory works in the Guildford area.

On the following dates, Guildford station will be closed apart from a limited number of services from Guildford to London Waterloo via Cobham & Stoke D ’Abernon:

  • Sunday 15 March
  • Sunday 22 March
  • Sunday 29 March

Follow-up works

After the 10-day closure, Network Rail will also carry out follow up works. These will take place on the following dates and will affect train services in the Guildford area:

  • Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 April
