December is the perfect time of year to imbue your life with a little magic. There are plenty of small ways to do this, for example, you might decorate your gingerbread cookies with some edible glitter or take a bite out of Rudolph’s carrot on Christmas Eve. There are also grander ways to feel the magic of Christmas, and one of our favourites is to catch a Christmas train bound for the North Pole.
If you've got young children or simply love unique festive experiences, then join CrossCountry as we explore some unmissable Christmas train rides around the UK.
Dartmouth Steam Railway Train of Lights
The Christmas Train of Lights sets off from Dartmouth Steam Railway station by Queen’s Park in Paignton, a two-minute walk from the main railway station, and promises to pull out all the stops. The steam train’s carriages are decorated with thousands of lights, creating a spectacle that can only be fully appreciated by seeing it for yourself.
The journey itself takes you through the Greenway tunnel and into a glowing, enchanted forest. Gazing out the window, you’ll be spellbound by the illuminations and festive art installations among the trees. It really is one of the most unique activities you can experience during the holiday season. Towards the end of the ride, you’ll be treated to an incredible view of the Dartmouth Christmas lights reflecting on the River Dart before you arrive back at your destination (Paignton – not the North Pole).
You can get to Paignton station with CrossCountry from key stations like Birmingham New Street, Bristol Temple Meads, and Exeter St Davids.
Churnet Valley Railway Polar Express
Embarking from Froghall station in Staffordshire, the Polar Express Christmas Train promises an hour of festive merriment as you head to the North Pole. Brought to you by Churnet Valley Railway, passengers are served hot chocolate and cookies by singing chefs before cosying up for an evening of stories, live entertainment, and, perhaps, a present from Santa himself.
Be sure to come along in your comfiest Christmassy pyjamas to feel like you're truly part of the beloved tale. This special event is the perfect treat for families in the run-up to Christmas and is sure to give you wonderful memories that will last.
North Yorkshire Moors Railway Santa Specials
Father Christmas is bringing his festive magic to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway this year. Hop aboard the Santa Express for an extraordinary train ride brimming with games, sing-alongs, and non-stop fun. It’s the ideal Christmas train journey for parents too, with a full hour to admire the stunning views of the Moors in winter.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway can be reached by Coastliner bus from Leeds and York, both of which are easily accessible with CrossCountry.
Severn Valley Railway Santa Specials
The Severn Valley Railway introduces Santa Steam Specials, a range of unmissable Christmas train ride experiences for the whole family to enjoy. Before you depart from Kidderminster station, you’ll be warmly welcomed aboard by a cheerful Mrs Claus. The train will take you through the green richness of the Severn Valley to Arley station – where the fun really begins.
Each year, the Severn Valley Railway puts on a marvellous pantomime starring Santa! Previous years have passed with great success, including Jingle, Jangle, and the Great Christmas Mystery. Severn Valley Railway also offers relaxed sessions on selected dates if you or a family member needs a calmer experience. This will feature low lighting, a quieter volume, and a reduced capacity.
Alternatively, for a truly unforgettable experience, consider booking an Afternoon tea or a luxury dining experience. With yuletide refreshments on the stunningly festive train, what's not to love?
