About the station
Willington Railway Station serves the small village and civil parish of Willington, in Derbyshire. The station first opened in 1839 as part of the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway. In the years that followed it was renamed Willington and Repton. The station closed to freight traffic in 1964 and closed to passengers in 1968. It was reopened again in 1994, after £565,000 of work to modernise it, and it was again named Willington.
Willington Station provides self-service ticket machines and has an induction loop fitted to assist the hearing-impaired. Bicycle storage is available and is protected by CCTV, as is the rest of the station. Willington Railway Station is served by several bus routes so continuing your journey via public transport couldn’t be easier. You can find onward travel information from Willington here.
CrossCountry serves popular routes including Birmingham to Willington, Derby to Willington and Burton on Trent to Willington. For more information about how CrossCountry can help please see our priority seating and travel assistance options for your journey.
Things to do in Willington
The arrival of the railway in the 19th century displaced the canals as the primary means of transporting goods through the village. Today, although it is no longer used for industry, the canal is an ideal place to take a walk through the English countryside.
Mercia Marina, which is less than a mile away from Willington Railway Station, and accessible on foot; is the largest waterside marina in Derbyshire. The marina offers holiday cottages, boat trips along the canal, and a host of other activities including shopping and eating destinations.
The former gravel pits nearby have also been transformed into the Willington Wetlands, a nature reserve managed by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. Here you can enjoy a family day out under open skies. Perhaps you will spot the first beavers in the area after an 800-year absence.
Other attractions include the nearby villages of Eggington to the west, and the conservation area of Barrow upon Trent to the east. Here you can see a Grade I listed church which dates back to the 12th century.
Derby Station is only seven minutes away so you can always escape to the city if you want to, but while you’re here, you should make the most of what the countryside has to offer.
Book your journey to Willington today with one of CrossCountry’s ticket options, and see what else there is to discover.
