A 16-17 Saver is a handy Railcard that makes train travel more accessible for young people. It can help save you money when travelling to sixth form, college, or an apprenticeship, and gives you more freedom to meet friends and explore the UK. If you’re eligible, it’s a great alternative to the 16-25 Railcard because there are no limits on what ticket you can buy or when you can travel.

Costing just £30 for a year, a Young Persons Railcard discount can be applied to any Standard ticket type, including Anytime, Advance, and Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak Tickets, saving you up to 50% on your rail fare every time you travel. The Railcard remains valid for one year or until your 18th birthday, whichever comes first.

Benefits of the 16-17 Saver Railcard

  • Store your Railcard on your device: With the free Railcard app, you can securely store it on your mobile device and access it anytime, anywhere.
  • Save on season tickets: The 16-17 Saver card can be applied to a Season Ticket, giving you the option to choose a college or workplace that's further from home without worrying about travel costs.
  • Pays for itself in no time: Enjoy half price savings that add up fast. After just a few trips, the Railcard will have already paid for itself.

  • A passport-style photo.

How to Use a 16-17 Saver Railcard

  • You can apply your 16-17 Saver Railcard to your ticket on the CrossCountry app, online, at ticket machines, or ticket booths.
  • When booking a journey online or through the CrossCountry app, simply select the 16-17 Railcard option, and your savings will be applied instantly.
  • If buying a ticket at a machine or with a ticket attendant, select the relevant option or ask the attendant to apply it.

How to Use a 16-17 Saver Railcard with a Season Ticket

Your Railcard can be used to get 50% off the price of a Season Ticket or Flexi Season Ticket. Please note, however, that you cannot use the Railcard as a substitute photocard for a paper Season Ticket. Instead, bring a passport-style photo to any National Rail ticket office, and they’ll issue a paper Season Ticket for you. When travelling, you’ll need to carry both your 16-17 Saver Railcard and the paper Season Ticket.

If you are buying an s-Ticket, you will not need a separate Photocard to validate your Season ticket.
