One of nature’s most sensational phenomena occurs twice each day. No matter where we are, Angkor Wat, Uluru, the Grand Canyon, or simply drawing back the curtains on a spring morning, the gift of a sunrise and a sunset is certain.

So magnificent is the view of the world waking up or going to sleep, that people brave the darkness to witness it. However, hiking in low visibility can be risky; the likelihood of injury or becoming lost greatly increases. If you are planning to visit one of the best places to watch the sunset or sunrise, please come prepared and choose a route that is safe and suits your experience.

Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh

Settle down in the grass with a thermos of tea and marvel as Edinburgh sleepily greets the morning. As the light grows, some of the city’s most famous landmarks will reveal themselves, like Edinburgh Castle and the Scott Monument. You should always exercise caution when hiking up or down Arthur’s Seat in low light. If you don’t feel confident, there are plenty of tours available online with qualified mountain leaders.

You can catch a train to Arthur’s Seat with CrossCountry, just travel to Edinburgh Waverley; it’s around an hour's walk to the top of the hill.

Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol

The best sunset and sunrise views in Bristol have Clifton Suspension Bridge in frame, so we won’t be trekking there today. Instead, there is a range of fantastic viewpoints to head towards.

One option is the Avon Gorge Viewpoint near Cumberland Basin, the view not only includes the suspension bridge but also many of Bristol’s colourful buildings. Alternatively, Clifton Observatory offers elevated panoramic views across the gorge. But our favourite viewpoint is actually from one of our favourite bars in Bristol, the terrace views from The White Lion are stunning, especially as the sun goes down.

Bathwick Fields, Bath

Forming part of the fulfilling Bath Skyline Walk, Bathwick Fields boasts a luxurious view of the city. When the sun rises, it casts light blues and yellows against the historic architecture, and when it sets in the evenings, pinks and oranges are added to the palette. This is the perfect place to wait for sunset on a long summer day, bring a picnic, a camera, and some friends, and you’ve got an idyllic evening.

Corfe Castle, Dorset

Rising dramatically from the Purbeck landscape, Corfe Castle offers one of the most atmospheric sunrise spots in the UK. In the early hours, a blanket of mist often settles in the valley below, leaving the castle ruins piercing through like something from a dream.

The best views can be found from the surrounding hills, particularly along the ridge towards West Hill. It’s an easy-to-moderate walk, but worth arriving early to watch the gradual reveal as the sun begins to break through the fog.

Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven

Found along Scotland’s northeast coast, Dunnottar Castle is a truly dramatic location for sunrise. As the first light of day breaks over the North Sea, it illuminates the ruins with a golden glow, contrasting beautifully with the tumultuous water below.

You can reach Dunnottar Castle with CrossCountry, just catch a train to Stonehaven from Aberdeen. The paths can be steep in places, so take care in low light. Arriving just before dawn ensures you’ll catch the castle at its most magical, quiet, and still.

Kynance Cove, Cornwall

Kynance Cove is one of Cornwall’s best coastal spots, known for its crystalline waters, bracing walks, and striking rock stacks. While it’s stunning at any time of day, sunset in this pocket of Cornwall is particularly special.

As the sun dips below the horizon and the cliffs glow, the sea reflects shades of gold and pink. At low tide, you can explore hidden caves and islands, but be sure to check tide times in advance, as access can quickly disappear.
