Benefits of the Family & Friends Railcard
Having fun days out and going on holidays in the UK is so much fun, but travelling as a large group can become expensive. With a Family & Friends Railcard, you can enjoy going on day trips and staycations with a discounted cost of travel, so you have more money to spend on having fun!
The Family & Friends Railcard is a great option when travelling with children by train. You can add up to four adults and four children (aged 5-15), and you don't need to be related! This means if you regularly travel with friends and their children, you can enjoy the savings together. With up to eight people taking advantage of the discount, you can enjoy even more days out.
The Railcard costs just £30 for one year, or £70 if you buy the three-year option. For this, you get 1/3 off the cost of most train fares. You can enjoy more than just discounted train tickets, as the Family & Friends Railcard includes special offers on attractions and places to eat!
How to Buy a Family & Friends Railcard
The easiest way to buy a Family & Friends Railcard is to apply online. You can choose between a Digital Railcard to use on the Railcard app, or a physical Railcard which will be sent to you in the post. Whichever option you choose, you will need the details of yourself & the second cardholder as well as a payment card.
If you buy a Digital Railcard, you will be sent a code and can start using your Railcard as soon as your application is processed. However, a physical Railcard may take a few days to arrive and you cannot use your discount until you have your card.
How to Use Your Family & Friends Railcard
The Family & Friends Railcard entitles you to 1/3 off the price of most train tickets around the UK for yourself and up to seven other people. To access this discount, you need to apply your Railcard when purchasing tickets.
If you are buying train tickets online, on the app, or at a ticket machine, simply select the Family & Friends Railcard to apply the discount. If you are buying tickets at a ticket booth, ask your attendant to apply the Railcard to your purchase.
When travelling, make sure to have your physical Railcard with you. If you have a Digital Railcard, ensure that your phone is adequately charged before travelling so that you can show attendants and staff your Railcard when asked.
